PriChat or WhatsApp: what switching gets you

WhatsApp genuinely encrypts your messages. Why switching still gets you something, and where WhatsApp honestly remains the better choice.

WhatsApp is the messenger almost everyone has. Good news first: WhatsApp has encrypted your messages end to end for years, technically using the Signal protocol, the same method PriChat uses. Anyone telling you Meta reads your chats in plaintext is simply wrong.

There are still good reasons to switch, and they have little to do with the content of your messages.

The difference is not the content, it is everything around it

Encryption protects what you write. It does not protect that you write, with whom and how often. That data is called metadata, and it is remarkably revealing. Someone who regularly messages an addiction helpline at three in the morning has exposed a problem without a single word being read.

WhatsApp needs your phone number. That ties every chat to your real identity, because the number sits in your mobile contract, in countless address books and often in data leaks. Your account belongs to a company whose business model is advertising.

What PriChat does differently

The row that matters to us is the third one. In PriChat's database there is no row saying "Anna talks to Ben". Senders are transmitted encrypted, group members are stored only as pseudonyms, and friend requests are sealed. Even if someone seized the server, they would find no social graph to analyse.

Where WhatsApp is honestly better

I am not going to lie to you to make you switch. WhatsApp has serious advantages:

  • Everyone is there. The best messenger is useless if the person you want to reach is not on it. That is WhatsApp's strongest argument, and it is a good one.
  • Huge team, years of scrutiny. WhatsApp's encryption has been examined by many experts. PriChat is a young project without an external security audit. That is a real drawback, and I would rather tell you myself.
  • Calls to anyone, anywhere. In everyday life, reach often beats technology.

When switching is worth it

If you do not want to hand over a phone number, if it matters to you that nobody can trace who you talk to, or if you simply want no Meta account any more, PriChat is the step forward. Realistically the two coexist: WhatsApp for the sports club, PriChat for everything that is nobody else's business.

Trying it takes a minute

No number, no store, no credit card. Pick a username, set a password, done. Runs straight in the browser.
